![[102-1_collage1.jpg|]] In Pitzer College’s 2024 Spring issue, we wanted to tell the story of Pitzer’s history and commitment to environmental sustainability. Told across five stories they contain both the institutional and student voices. They range from Pitzer’s leadership in environmental sustainability to how it prepares its students for a possible future of devastating climate change. Making up nearly half of the magazine issue, these five stories needed a cohesive visual language to bind them together. To do that, I decided upon creating collages for each story as well as the cover. ![[102-1_collage2.jpg]] ![[102-1_collage8.jpg]] What I love about collages is the potential for storytelling. By mixing and remixing images, each feature story can be told through fragments, pulled from archives, from students, from wherever a story's visual evidence happened to live. This also meant I didn't have to wait for photography to be locked before I could start designing. As images arrived from our various sources, I could fold them into a composition already built to hold them, rather than redesigning around whatever showed up. In one case, I went a step further and worked directly with our photographer, describing the shot and the pose I wanted from the subject, so the resulting image would slot into the collage as if it had been made for it, because it had. Easter eggs reward the observant, and the accumulation of fragments (found, borrowed, and directed) lets us construct a, perhaps, better future.
