![[102-2_liberalarts1.jpg]] Liberal arts education have been under fire on many fronts: financial and demographic pressure, questions about return on investment, and now generative AI. Amid all this, Pitzer College shares the story of John Landgraf and his uncommon career path, from anthropology major to leading one of the most successful television networks in the US. His story is a reminder that the skills a liberal arts education cultivates—curiosity, adaptability, the ability to read culture and context—are exactly what the moment demands. I had a hard time with this layout. One thing I faced was the lack of photos and a photo shoot was not possible given Landgraf’s schedule. What helped was scouring the text and highlight key phrases and descriptions. Early in the story, I cam across a quote from Landgraf. He explained his career path using a twist of the old adage, “thinking outside the box”: he said to blow the walls out of it. It was here that I found my inspiration. Instead of using photos to tell and amplify his story, I used the grid system itself, the underlying structure that guides the design of magazine. I deconstructed the grid to tell Landgraf’s story. As you move through the pages, the margins erode and text boxes increasingly break through until it settles onto a different grid system.
