A striking feature of Pitzer's campus (besides the drought-tolerant landscape) is the number of murals on the walls of its buildings. Since the 1970s, over 150 murals have been created, many by students. Some are silly, some are political, some are aimed at the institution itself. All reflect the voices of the students, and that is what I wanted to depict.
How do you visualize sound? I considered a few options: an audio equalizer, its bars easily mistaken for the campus's own buildings; a sine wave on an oscilloscope, though I couldn't find a way to fit the murals themselves into that image. In the end, a waveform proved the most recognizable choice.
For this project, I designed the cover first. This is where the waveform needed to read most clearly. If it didn't work here, it likely wouldn't work in the feature story either. Fortunately, it did.
As I worked through the layout, I found myself asking the reverse question: what would the murals actually _sound_ like? It took some sleuthing and a little help from generative AI, but I managed to convert image to sound. The result was otherworldly and a bit hard on the ears—have a listen below. If the murals have always been the students' voice, this was simply the first time we could actually hear it.
